I have had 5 bags of this substrate in my 54 gallon Fluval Osaka planted discus tank for 3 years now, and I have to say my plants just love it! The black colour I have found is not true black, but more of a grey. (Perhaps it is my lights..) I am more than satisfied with it's affinity for my plants. Discus also enjoy nosing around in this substrate with my cories and bottom feeders.. It's great stuff.

As a complete novice I chose this substrate for my new aquascaping attempt and saw new growth appearing on the plants I had trimmed and planted within days. The black substrate really shows off the vibrant colours of my healthy plants and a single bag was ample for my 64 litre tank.

Great substrate! I like this more than ADA AquaSoil and other substrates for planted tanks.

Brilliant substrate. After a novice error of choosing gravel, coupled with a pre-made 'carpet' of HC , my tank was ruined as the gravel went completely black. Had to re-home my fish into a smaller tank & the rest of my beloved plants withered & died. After 6 hours of using this eco complete the tank was crystal & I mean crystal clear, no washing off before hand.New plants are at early stages, but no yellowing of leaves & I am getting oxygen bubbles on my new riccia with the CO2 turned off & only low lighting. Expensive- yes - worth it - oh yes. Highly recommended

is this product meant to be used purely on its on as a substrate, or is it meant for the 1st layer and supposed to be covered with sand/gravel ?

Staff
It's a complete substrate so does not require topping.

Guest
can you put topping on if you want to change the colour

Staff

yes

I have read reviews by some saying you can add this substrate directly to the tank without needing to rinse it first and others saying it should be rinsed first and the liquid in the bag it comes in thrown away!! Could you please tell me which is true please.

Staff
Don't rinse! No need

Guest
Would this be ok to add to an up and running setup, just mixing into the existing gravel?

Staff

If you pour it slowly in then yes

I have a 125l tank, how many bags would I need. I would like it around 4cm depth. Is it worth putting aquasoil under it?

Staff

2-3 bags

1 bag is enough for 50L.

No need for anything underneath it
