Description

Purigen is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or absorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%. Purigen controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen is designed for both marine and freshwater use. ??

Why It's Different
Selectivity: Purigen is the highest capacity organic filtration resin on the market. No other products can compare to its ability to clear haziness and polish water to unparalleled clarity. Unlike other products on the market which are simple ion-exchange resins, Purigen is specifically designed to be an organic scavenging resin. When ion-exchange resins are filled to capacity by metals and other contaminants, Purigen has barely begun to reach its potential. Purigen generally ignores simple elemental compounds, having an extreme affinity for nitrogenous organics. The primary source of nitrogenous compounds in an aquarium is waste. Fish, corals, even plants produce nitrogenous waste. Purigen removes that waste faster and more completely than anything else on the market. ??

Capacity: Purigen’s possesses enhanced capacity owing to its vast surface area. All other resins on the market are purely spherical extruded beads. These beads remain smooth even under a microscope. Purigen is both spherical and macroreticular. It has microscopic pores that increase its usable surface area to many times that of a purely spherical resin.

??Regeneration: Purigen can also be regenerated. As it adsorbs waste products, Purigen will change color from a pale blonde to a dark brown, almost black. Once it is exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach will literally “burn off” the organics that have been removed from the tank. Watch out for products that claim to be regenerable with a brine solution. That is the regeneration procedure for ion-exchange purposes. A brine solution will not remove organics. While such resins have a limited capacity for organic adsorption, a brine regeneration process only replaces removed ionic compounds. It does not destroy large organic molecules that were removed, which is the primary function of organic adsorption resins.

Directions
Rinse before use. Use in a fine mesh filter bag. Each 1 L treats up to 4,000 L (1,000 gallons*) for up to six months. Exhaustion is indicated by a pronounced discolouration of the beads to dark brown or black.

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard, Prime, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. Original colour and full activity should now be restored and Purigen is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odour of chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

Great Stuff, would highly recommend.. It can be reconditioned, but at this price I find it easier just to replace it :)

I learnt about this product from A&E u tube channel, so I bought it & put it on the last layer of my canister filter on top of lots & lots of aqualon filter wool & the result after a few hours is spectacular. So that is another excellent product I bought from A&E.

thank you very much...

Ordered two bags and these were delivered next day. Placed one in the internal filter of my 240 litre tank and within 24 hours the water was crystal clear. Anyone who does not use this product is missing the superb viewing experience and water quality that it brings. I can recommend this product from the excellent Seachem stable in the highest possible terms. Try it and see - you will not be disappointed. I will never be without it - probably one of the best aquarium products available and it can be regenerated easily and cheaply many times.

Does this polish the water like carbon?

Staff

Indeed it does - but so much better than carbon as it doesn't strip nutrients out of the water such as fertilisers

Guest
When rinsing before use should you do this in ordinary tap water?Cheers mark

Staff
Yep

I've recently purchased a 100 litre tank with an overhead trickle filter very similar to the aqua one tanks. When i make the changeover from my old tank to this i was thinking of adding this in place of the activated carbon that comes with the tank.I use Seachem Flourish excel at the moment too but i've read some water de chlorinators can have an adverse affect and turn toxic when using Seachem Purigen.Do you know anything about this?I use Bioactive Tapsafe.

Staff

I'm not aware of any conflict with excel but there can be an issue with some water conditions. See below:

If they use an amine based polymer it will not foul the resin but will render it non-regenerable. What amine based polymers will do is bond not just to Purigen but to any organic scavenging resin as well as any ion exchange resin and when you attempt to regenerate the resin they will then bond with the chlorine to form chloramine which can be released into the aquarium. This is not just an issue with Purigen but with all resins being sold in the pet trade. The problem only occurs when one attempts to regenerate the resin, there is no problem unless you wish to regenerate the resin you are using. Seachem products do not contain amine based polymers and are safe to be used in conjunction with not only our resins but also with other companies resins.

do you add this stuff to the external filter, i have an eheim canister filter? regards

Staff
Yes that's the best idea

Guest
Hi I have a 280 litre tank, new to all this. I would use this to replace the carbon section in my eheim external filter? And how my h would I need? Also I have already used slime coat declorinators. Does this mean I can never get rid of it and therefore not be able to use this product? Or does slime de orinator breakdown? How do I get rid of it so I could use this in my filter? Could yu be kind enough to give a detailed answer rather than. Yes or no? I'm new to this Regards G

Staff

Removing carbon is a good idea but I don't quite follow what you mean. As long as you use just an ordinary dechlorintor you don't need to worry.

Guest
Well the reviews point out that if one has used a slime coat dechlorinator then it renders this unregerateable?

Staff

I see. In that case you'll need to use a different type of dechlorinator. A slime coat type only needs to be used when fish are introduced in my opinion.

Guest
does the slime coat dechlornator degrade? ie if i stop using it will i then be able to regenerate the purigen?

Staff

In a nutshell yes. Don't use a dechlorinator with slime coat when using purigen.

Guest
When regenerating Purigen it suggests, for freshwater use, after soaking in Prime to dechlorinate it, to additionally use Neutral Regulator or Discus Regulator so that the pH is not raised too high. Neutral Regulator claims to also remove chlorine and chloramine so why do you need to use Prime as well?

Staff

As a precaution - better to be safe than sorry

Guest
How much would i need for a 300 litre tank. ide like to try it and if its good would order more.

Staff

start with 1 and see how you get on!

Guest
so one x 100ml would be enough for my eheim 350?

Staff

quite possibly just start with 1 and see how you go, and if the water isnt clear enough, you need another bag.

Guest
Hi. You've said that Purigen does not remove fertilizers so I can happily use it while dosing Neutro without any imbalance in my aquarium in any way?

Staff

That's correct

Guest
Hi. I meant Neutro but that probably won't change answer to my question. And using it won't affect growth of my plants? I heard it removes nitrates which I as far I as know are needed for plants.

Staff

It is designed to be used in planted aquariums.

Guest
Please can you tell me the dimensions of the 100ml sachet. I want to check if it will fit in my filter. Thanks.

Staff

bag size 11x7cm

Guest
Hi will the 100ml sachet be enough for a 180 litre tank, and I've been reading other people's questions should I stop using api stress coat and just use normal water dechlorinator

Staff

Should be fine. But dont use stress coat with it.

Guest
For tanks with internal air sponge filters (like my nano shrimp tank) - would placing the bag near where the greatest water flow is, work effectively? - It's a lightly planted 15L tank that is craving some wood.

Staff

Yeah that should work - just needs water passing though it

Guest
hi there i have just ordered 2 purigen bags and put aquarian water conditioner that contains aloe vera is that ok to use with purigen

Staff

That should be OK

I'm in the process of setting up a trigon 190, i will be running two external filters (tetra tec ex600 plus) ones a fully matured filter and the other will be a new one, should I add a sachet to both filters or just the one, also If I was to add to the mature filter in my current tank will i need to do anything else?

Staff

For really clear water add purigen to both filters
