Get your pond ready for the summer and keep it algae free - the natural way. Ideal for outdoor ponds or open top aquariums.
Like water hyacinth, water lettuce is a useful plant for keeping the pond free of algae in the spring and early summer months when the water lilies and other aquatic plants are still getting going. It is helpful as it outcompetes algae for nutrients in the water, thereby preventing massive algae blooms.
Be aware this plant will perish with any frost so if it's cold or the weather has a cold snap, beware.
It is a tropical floating plant, and so will die off completely and for good in winter, but it will multiply rapidly during the summer if the pond water is sufficiently rich in nutrients. If you want it to survive the winter, bring it inside where it's warmer.
It is a good plant for container water gardens as well which look great on a window sill or a bowl in your kitchen - a refreshing difference to cut flowers.
