Description

Originating from South America this versatile foreground aquarium plant is easy to grow - common name of hair grass, dwarf hairgrass or needle spikerush (the last one being less common). It's also found in Europe, parts of Asia, North America, South America and Australia - so widespread!

Provide it with CO2 and watch it throw out runners and spread through your aquarium quickly. However in a low tech tank (non CO2) it still grows easily, just not as quickly. Looks best when planted in groups and to work out how much you need, one pot per 15cm2 is sufficient. Once planted avoid trimming until you can see visible roots - then you can trim heavily, down to a few cm for the best effect.

If you receive this plant with short tiny spikes, it will only display these in shallow water. These flowers are less than 5mm in diameter and 6mm long and are sharply pointed and is indicative of the environment the plant would normally be found in (marshes/bogs etc).

came well packaged, divided into 15 small clumps and looks great at the front of my tank. 3 weeks in have trimmed it once and slowly runners are starting to appear. very happy with this product.

Stunning plant supplied, doing very well. Hard to separate bunch so planted as a plug. time will tell.

A good plant growing well.Splits into several smaller portions, so good value.

Fantastic plants and very well packed and delivered, I'm praying that they survive 30 degree water temperature as they look great.

Nice plant.

Fantastic condition and split well and has rooted in nicely and already spreading plus my dwarf chain loaches aren't digging it up which is a huge bonus. Great delivery as always (not my first time buying this but didnt review before as I was an idiot and stripped all the rock wool off and it just wouldnt stay in the substrate) Thanks for the video on here showing how to plant up carpet plants much less stressful.

How many centimetres of substrate does this plant require, and will it still grow with no CO2 or nutrient rich substrate?

Staff
It's fine for a 20l tank and is ok without CO2

Staff
Like all plants they like a substrate of 2 inches or more depth and will always do better with a nutrient rich substrate and CO2. However they can survive without both.

When you plant this plant, do you need to trim the roots and if so, how much do you need to trim?

Guest
The product description states that this plant needs to be kept in a medium to high light environment. Does that mean that it requires more hours or light, or does it mean that the light has to be brighter?

Staff
You can trim the roots but its not necessary

Staff
It means the intensity, not duration of light.

Guest
Should plants be left in or take out of their pots when planting?

Staff

Always take them out of their pots and split the plant into 4 or more. Remove as much rockwool as possible - this can be done by running it under the tap.

Guest
Please could you advise on the diameter of the pots that these come in?

Staff
All potted plants on our site are 5cm diameter

Guest
does it come with the little pot as well

Staff
Of course - but you'd remove that when placing in your tank

Hi, I have a 125L aquarium (81x36) and would like to carpet around 75% of the aquarium. With this in mind, how many of these plants would you recommend? Cheers

Staff
1 pot is good for approx 15cm2 You therefore need 11 pots

Guest
I have a 100 litre gravel tank. With NO co2 system. Would it be ok to plant this into the gravel and will it be ok?

Staff
It will be fine - just wont grow quick

Guest
whats the best way to get a carpet with hair grass ??

Staff

CO2 and lots of fertilisers

Guest
hi wants the height of the hairgrass compared to dwarf hairgrass as would like to use this as background plant and dwarf hairgrass for foreground

Staff

About 4inches so definitely not a background plant!

Guest
I want a plant that will carpet quite quickly and not grow too tall, I only have medium sized gravel, approx 5-10mm diameter, no other substrate, I use Neutro , Neutro CO2 and pressurised CO2, will this plant grow in regular gravel?

Staff

Yeah sure it will, just not as well as plants in finer gravel. 5-10mm is very big really.

Guest
i have a 30L tank, and want the hairgrass to cover the whole thing how many pots do u advise i buy so it carpets the whole tank in a few weeks time

Staff

Use 1 pot per 15cm2

Guest
which carpets better this or HC??

Staff

Both the same

Guest
i have moler clay as my substrate and as it is light it tends to loose its slopes and go flat over time, so i want to carpet it with this and see if the routes will hold it in place, what is the depth of the routes?

Staff

It may help but not a great deal. Few foreground plants have deep roots.

Guest
would this carpet in a 54 litre tank running 2 t8 15 watt lights without co2 also would substrate would you recommend thanks

Staff

Yes over time it will carpet. Try Colombo florabase substrate.

Guest
how do i plant this do i divide it or just plant it as a big group (i want to get it to carpet) thanks

Staff

Split it up as much as you can

Guest

Slowly

Guest
