Description

Shrimp originate from Japan and Asia where they are found living naturally living in streams and swamps. They have gained popularity due to their lovely colour but also their appetite for all kinds of algae - this makes them perfect for the planted aquarium. They are peaceful, and are a great addition to any peaceful freshwater aquarium.

These shrimp prefer a well planted tank with lots of hiding places. They should be housed with small peaceful fish which will not pose a threat of eating these shrimp - they can be housed with larger fish but they will hide and may end up being dinner. They prefer water that is slightly acidic, but will handle a wide range of water temperatures. Cherry Shrimp breed in freshwater providing they are happy with their water conditions and their environment. They are omnivores and consume algae and any fish food they can find or scavenge. We recommend you supplement their diet with one of the shrimp foods available here at Aqua Essentials.

How our shrimp arrive with you?

We take shipping of our shrimp very seriously and every effort is made to ensure they arrive with you in the same strong and healthy condition as they were sent in. We place them in a bag with no air - this is because their is plenty of oxygen in the water and by leaving air in the bag the water movement is increased causing the shrimp to get bashed around.

We put a small handful of filter wool in the bag - this is for the shrimp to hold on to. Shrimp are much happier when they have something to hold on to and provides cushioning and stability for them.  The bag is placed in a small strong cardboard with plenty of shredded paper to protect them. Shredded paper also provides warmth. The cardboard box provides insulation as well.

The shrimp are then sent via Express Delivery only so they arrive with you the very next day.

We recommend that you acclimatise your shrimp well before placing them in their new home. You will receive a care sheet with your shrimp with instructions of how to do this.

We also have a wonderful acclimatisation product that you would find very useful and something I recommend. Click here for more info.

by Phil Winfield on 9/4/2016

Sadly these didn't survive but I'm pretty sure this was down to my mistakes rather than the quality of the shrimps

by Stuart Parsons on 28/3/2016

Some fairly bomb-proof packing these are sent out in, so glad that they were safe and well insulated and all shrimp survived and are happy in their new home.

WHAT WATER DO USE FOR THE CHERRY SHRIMPS AS I WILL BE GETTING SOME FROM YOU SOON WHEN I GET MY SETUP DONE

Guest
can they go in coldwater tanks with 4 danios aprox 3cm in size. the tank is a 20 litre

Staff
Tropical tanks only

Guest
how big are they

Staff

Range from 10mm-20mm on average

Guest
what guide to stocking levels do you use for shrimp e.g. inches per gallon as with fish

Staff
There really is no guide as they put almost zero strain on the filter. You can pretty much have as many as you want.

Guest
i am going to be setting up a shrimp tank soon, and i wanted to know will cherry shrimp breed so much the tank will be overrun or is there a way to control their breeding?

Staff
Unlikely they will over run your tank but there is no way to stop them breeding. Any surplus simply sell off :)

Guest
I wanted to check whether these shrimp are ok with Zebra Danios, Corrydoras, tetras and Plattys. My water is around 25 degrees and PH is reasonably high but my fish are happy and thriving in this. Are these quite hardy shrimp or do you recommend different ones?

Staff
Yes they will be fine with your fish. They're hardy too as long as you acclimatise them like we suggest when you receive them.

Guest
Can you send via Express Delivery to Rep of Ireland. Is it risky for the shrimp to send international mail ?

Staff

We can send to Rep of Ireland - costs a little more but is possible for sure. Can't do it in the winter but can in September.

Email us on info@aquaessentials.co.uk for a price.

Guest
I have a BiOrb tank and was wondering if these shrimp would be suitable? It has Mountain cloud minnow, Leopard and Zebra Danios in it. Thanks

Staff

only if you have a heater

Guest
I wondered how long the shrimps can stay in the packaging? Are they ok if I order these express delivery (to the office) and keep them there until I get home in the evening (around 7pm?). I do not want to stress them too much.

Staff

Yep they'll be fine - that's what a lot of people do ;)

Received the shrimps yesterday - Thanks! Dwarf hair grass was in top condition too. The shrimps seemed very agitated when I started to acclimatise them as advised on the info sheet, they could not wait to get into my tank. There seem to be four males and one big red lady. She seems fine, at first a little timid and now chilling and slowly moving and grasing. The lads howver won't stop swimming back and forth? I put some steamed spinach in there which they ignored. I worry they may be stressed? Or are they just excited about the big red lady, who seems uphased? They have been in the tank for about 20 hours. Water condition should be fine: 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia, 25.5 degrees Celsius, Ph 7.2. Planted tank with rocks and drift wood. How do I get the guys to calm down? Thanks for your advise.

Staff
They'll be fine and are just settling in. As long as you acclimatised them as recommended they'll get used to their new environment :)

Guest
Thanks a lot!!! As always shopping experience and after-care from Aquaessentials has been exceptionally good!

Guest
will the shrimp eat algae aswell?

Staff

of course!

Guest
Hello. I have no clue of anything aquarium, your kind assistance is very much appreciated. Which type of small fish is more recommended to be put together with them? Is it a must? Is it a must to buy them in 5s? What's the recommended amount of shrimps? Would they be okay living in a still freshwater bowl with a marimo moss ball? If so, what's the best way to keep them well? Thank you so muuuch..!

Staff
You need to do some research online. Google is your friend. Shrimp need to be kept with small fish that are not predatory. Give them a natural environment and they will be happy. Minimum purchase is 5.

Guest
In a tropical aquarium with naturally breeding (and raising) white clouds

Staff

They would be fine in there

Guest
How soon do you expect to be shipping these chaps again? I just got my new aquarium planted and settled and now I can't order my shrimps! :(

Staff

All depends on the weather! Snow is a no go!

Guest
If I ordered these on christmas eve before 2 pm what time do you think they would be dispatched. Do you deliver on christmas day or boxing day?

Staff

Shipping will begin again after Jan 3rd

Guest
I have a 90litre tank with plenty of hiding places, however all plants are plastic, temp kept between 25 to 26 degrees will this be ok

Guest
I have white cloud mountain minnows, cardinal tetras, xray tetras, an apple snail and a clown pleco will this be fine for the shrimp, tank heated around 26 degrees

Staff
Yes fine

Guest
So can they not be kept in an unheated tank?

Staff
As long as temp doesn't get any less that 20c

Guest
can some shrimps get eaten by larger fish in my tank?

Staff
If it can fit in a fishes mouth then they will eat it

Guest
is the price per shrimp or do you get more than one for 2 pounds? and is there a minimum order?

Staff
Min order is 5 shrimp for £10

Guest
what are the perfect breeding conditions for these shrimp and how likely is it that they will breed. also whats the maximum amount one can have in a 35 ltr tank?

Staff
Use a complete substrate like Colombo Flora-Base and it provides the ideal conditions. You could have 10-15 shrimp in a 35L tank

Guest
any idea when you will be stocking shrimp again, as i will be starting a new planted tank and would love a colony of these to help keep algae in check

Staff

When it warms up! At this rate, who knows :)

Guest
Hi. Will dwarf gourami eat the shrimp?

Staff
Possibly yes

Guest
will green neon tetras eat shrimp?

Staff
Probably not

Guest
any update on when these will be in stock again please?

Staff

now!

Guest
lol thats a shame... just ordered 10 from another website, but would have preferred to order from you guys

Staff

maybe next time :)

Guest
I would like to introduce shrimp, trouble is I have three clown loaches, do you think that these would eat them, Thanks Tom

Staff
They would eat them for sure

Guest
I have very hard, alkaline water (london). Will these be okay in this water?

Staff

If you acclimatise them slowly they'll be fine

Guest
I have a the through tank, will these shrimp end up in the sump, or will they generally avoid the outflow. Also will they be prey for rainbow fish?

Staff
Unless you use a guard they will end up in the sump. If a fish can fit a shrimp in its mouth then it's dinner.

Guest
Would they be safe with a honey gourami ?

Staff

hard to tell - depends how curious your gourami is. Sometimes it's OK though.

Guest

Staff

Guest

Staff

Guest
23l Fluval Edge set-up on 2nd Sept. Planted 10th Sept. Water parameters look OK. pH a little over 7.0 Temp 24C. I live an hour's drive away from Aqua Essentials, but Express Delivery at £7.99 looks cheaper than 10 litres of petrol. When would it be safe to introduce the shrimps?

Staff

once no Nitrite is showing (so week 4 is normally ok)

Guest
Will they be okay with platys, neon tetras and guppies?

Staff

Should be fine

Guest
Are cherry shrimps ok in a 2.5 gallon tank? What other kinds of fish would you reccomend as well?

Staff

Sure they are. Fish wise neons.

Guest
What about freshwater spider crabs(Limnopilos naiyanetri)?

Staff

not recommended

Guest
I have an Aqueon Betta Bow 2.5 gallon tank. Will the cherry shrimps get caught in the filter?

Guest
I have a very tiny (2.5) gallon tank. Will my puny freshwater spider crabs attack my neon tetras? Thanks!

Staff

maybe - hard to know what your filter is like

Staff

Spider crabs will eat shrimp

Hi.I'm always trying to clean off some green algae i'm getting on the rock in my tank. The rocks aren't covered in algae but just enough to annoy for overall appearance.I try and clean the rock with a toothbrush with some Neutro CO2 when i do my weekly water changes but it's pretty difficult to remove all.Are shrimp pretty good rock cleaners? I have a flying fox fish who was a great little cleaner when first introduced to the tank but he's getting more lazy at cleaning as he's getting older and grown!! I'm a little bit wary of my nitrate levels though where shrimp are concerned as i add Neutro (plus)daily with pressurised CO2.No algae problems with my plants at present and circulation is good, all plants swaying gently.Would it just be wiser to add a little more Neutro CO2 to the tank instead of adding shrimp?

Staff

Yes they're pretty good at cleaning in general but high nitrates have no effect on shrimp.

What you are seeing with your rocks is perfectly natural - if they're in a prominant location directly under lights with no cover then you will always have maintenance on your rocks. You could try nerite snails as they do a much better job cleaning rocks.

Guest
I have some cherry shrimp in a 2gallon fluval. I plan to add a corbicual sp to the tank. Will the cherry shrimps bother it?

Staff

They wont fuss it

Guest
Before I draw hasty conclusions, are you sure there will be enough room for both the 3 cherries and the corbicual in one 2 gallon Fluval?

Staff

Of course. Shrimp take up no space in any tank really so it's not part of the stocking density calculations.

Guest
Could i add a borneo sucker as well?

Staff

Probably

Guest
Do cories and shrimp go well together?

Staff

Yes fine

Guest
What fish would you reccomend in addition to the shrimp for a 10 litre? Thanks for the help! :)

Staff

Cardinals or neons

Guest
Are they invertebrate safe?

Staff

Yes. Please do some searching on google first.

Guest
I currently have a male betta in a five gallon tank. I have had experience with ghost shrimp in the past, so I had worries, but nothing happened. The betta completely ignored them. However, due to the Cherry Shrimp's red color, I have concerns. I have also considered adding a clam, but Im not sure. Please give me your feedback.

Staff

You might be fine then but there's no guarantee.

Guest
Do you plan on expanding the variety of shrimp you sell? e.g. cardinal shrimp, tiger shrimp etc?

Staff

not at the moment

Guest
Where do you source your shrimp from? Are they captive bred or wild caught?

Staff

Captive bred

Guest
Hello....I've just set up a four foot tank with red eyed tetras and red crabs.....I am looking for something different....Would shrimps be suitable?

Staff

tetras are normally fine but not with crabs

Guest
could i have these with mollies, guppys, tetras and Galaxy Rasbora

Staff

In most cases yes this won't be an issue. Shrimp are best with Community type fish.

Guest
Can I keep my cherry shrimp with leopard danio or am I asking for trouble ?

Staff

should be fine

Guest
I have a small sucking loach can I keep cherry or wood shrimps with them I also have snails

Staff
