Bulbs Explained

Aponogeton bulbs are supplied bare unless otherwise stated, meaning they arrive without leaves and in a natural dormant state. This is completely normal and not a fault. These bulbs do not sprout on demand, they need time, stable conditions, and a little patience before growth begins. Some may show signs of life within a few weeks, while others can take considerably longer depending on temperature, light, and aquarium setup. During this dormant period the bulb may look inactive, but given the right conditions it will gradually wake up and produce healthy new growth when it’s ready, not when we ask it nicely.

Originating from Madagascar the Aponogeton ulvaceus Bulb is a beautiful centre piece for your tank. This bulb has bright green vellum-like, heavy crimpled leaves. The older bulbs can grow up to 50 leaves given the right conditions!!!!

This plant grows QUICKLY in the aquarium too under basic conditions. We provide it will very little light and it grows even with little water movement. We've tried it under faster water movement and it loves that too which means this plant is suitable for beginners and up.

In terms of positioning, obviously the background is the only suitable location. Simply drop it into the chosen location and leave it be. It will throw roots down and anchor itself. Note: All bulbs are sent without leaves (so bulb only).

There are many varieties of Aponogeton ulvaceus, some of which need a dormant period, when the root does not produce leaves. This often lasts for several months so if no leaves are growing, patience is needed.

Information about growing mosses:

1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.

Monster plant!

Had two of these bulbs delivered with no leaves (as described) within 3 days it had sprouted and now they are monstrous with giant flowering arms. They are a favourite with all of the fish but the Cory's especially love them. The picture below is a month after planting a bald bulb and they Arnt even in the aquasoil, they are actually just plonked on the sand !
