The ultimate ALGAE EATER.

1 shrimp per 5L of water is the recommended quantity - any less and they won't do the job you want.

Does your tank suffer from algae in any way? Are you like many others tearing your hair out and wondering what you might be doing wrong with your aquarium and where all the algae is coming from? Amano shrimp are the ULTIMATE algae eaters working day and night, consuming huge amounts of aquarium no matter what time of day it is. Amano shrimp are strong, full of character and HUNGRY for algae. They've been the best algae eaters ever since they were first introduced into this hobby.

History of Amano Shrimp:

The Amano Shrimp was discovered in the 1990s in Japan and made famous by aquascaper Takashi Amano who harnessed the power of these shrimp as they consume vast amounts of algae. Larger than all the other freshwater shrimp, they work tirelessly keeping the algae levels down at all times and you would be amazed at the sheer amount of algae they actually consume in 24 hours.

Will my fish eat them?

All shrimp are part of the food chain so they must not be kept with fish they may try and eat them (angels for example) and their preferred tank mates are community small fish. However Amano shrimp are strong and no walk over (especially the XL one's we sell).

How many can I have in my tank?

As many as you like as they have little impact of stocking density. In a 100L tank I suggest 20 Amano shrimp.

What conditions do they prefer?

They're not particularly fussy but in general an acidic environment, preferring a pH range of 6.3-7 and will accept water temperatures up to 28 degrees.

Do I acclimatise them like fish?

The short answer is no. Although they are hardy you must acclimatise them slowly. We have a wonderful acclimatisation product that you would find very useful and something I recommend. Click here for more info.

Note: The picture with 3 tanks shows how efficient the Amano shrimp is when it comes to keeping a plant aquarium free from algae. The aquarium to the left had 3 shrimps, the one in the middle had none, while the one to the right had one shrimp during the start-up. They were all planted in the same way: 3 Anubias barteri var. nana and 3 Eleocharis parvula. The picture has been taken 3 months after the start-up. It is experiments like these that make Tropica recommend 1 Amano shrimp per 5 L water during the start-up of a new plant aquarium. Once a biological balance has been achieved in the aquarium, you can easily settle for fewer shrimps - e.g. 1 per 15 L water. However, if you have many fish that you feed, then we recommend that you maintain the population of 1 Amano shrimp per 5 L water.

All arrived healthy.went to work straight away aquarium looks cleaner in just a couple of weeks.

10 shrimp all arrived alive and well. As another reviewer mentioned, they hide well so I can only confirm 7 are still alive. I love watching them scoot around the tank. Wish I had the space for a larger tank so I could buy more.

Ordered 10 for my 100 litre tank. Well packed and swift delivery. I was pleased to receive a phone call from AE confirming my order, and also advising that they would probably remain hidden for a week or so, which they did. Now they're coming out more and have done a wonderful job cleaning up the tank. Very entertaining to watch, and amazing how quickly some appear when algae food wafers are dropped into the tank. Main drawback is that as they do hide in the plants a lot I am having to assume that as the four currently visible are ok then the others probably are! I will definitely be ordering another 10 to bring them up to the allowance of 20 for my tank size.

Got to say excellently packaged and delivered quickly. Loving the shrimps. Will recommend .

All the shrimp were alive and well, the packaging was excellent though it needed to be,wasn’t impressed with the delivery companies handling of the package marked fragile! Are they made aware that there is live shrimp in there?

by Stephen G. on 15/12/2017

The shrimps arrived with the plants I had ordered, and appear to have settled in well. I always enjoy seeing these industrious little creatures busily going about their work in the tank. A great addition to an aquarium!

Hello. I'd like some Japonica Shrimp but would be grateful if you know they would be safe from platys and black mollies? They would be in an 80l heavily planted tank with lots of hiding places, but I'd like them not to be hiding from the fish! Many thanks!

Staff

I would imagine so - they're big and bold.

Guest
Great! Thank you. Expect an order first thing tomorrow. :-)

Do these shimps only eat algae or will they eat my moss plants?

Staff

Algae

How big do these shrimps grow? Are they the size of cherry shimp or bigger? ( I know it says 2-3cm but I wasn't sure if that was the size they come from you or the max size they grow )

Staff

2-3cm. They're very big shrimp for eating lots of algae! Much bigger than cherry shrimp which are about 15mm.

Guest
Will they live with my cherry shrimp?

Staff

yes

Guest
will this be ok with a silver shark about 3in long and getting bigger and small teras thanks

Staff

If it can fit in its mouth, then its dinner. Bare that in mind. Sometimes OK with bigger fish but can't guarantee.

Guest
Can I use with artificial plants?

Staff

Yes

Good Morning AquaEssentails, Could you let me know if these shrimp are ok in a two week old, three foot tank with Co2 (no fish yet) ? The tank is quite heavily planted many thanks Karen

Staff

As long as it has cycled then yes.

Guest
are they compatible with Discus? I thought they may help with general tank maintenance and help clean up the small bits of beef heart left by the Discus in a heavily planted tank.

Staff

The XL size we sell should be fine with discus

Would it be unwise to introduce these while treating the tank for hair algae? I'm trying to keep the algae levels down with a treatment but wasn't sure if it would be harmful to invertebrates?

Staff

Correct. Add these after treatment.

if you would like our algae sheet to be emailed over to you, email us on info@aquaessentials.co.uk

Added my shrimp to the tank, they seem to just be sitting about on my water circulation pump. They do not seem to be eating much algae! I have had them several weeks now so should be settled in. I have a well planted tank so they can quite easily get lost, some time I don't see them for day's. Any suggestions?

Staff

They're stressed. Check for nitrite.

Do they have somewhere to hide? Are fish showing an interest.

Are you changing the water too often?

Guest
Are these shrimps good at clearing Bryopsis..?

Staff

No. Freshwater algae only

Guest
Since I live in the Outer Hebrides your delivery will take two days - will the shrimp survive that long in the packaging?

Staff

We do not ship livestock to your location - sorry

Hi! I have to a tank with two large goldfish, they are quite old now and it's been just the two of them for a number of years but I always have an alge problem. Would introducing a couple of shrimp to the tank upset them? What size shrimp would I need? The fish are about 12cm long. Thank you.

Staff

Should be fine - go for large size

Guest
Hi guys, any idea when your shrimps will be back in stock? Ive subscribed to the notification but just wanted a heads up!
