Cherry Shrimp (Caridina heteropoda)

Cherry Shrimp originate from Japan and Asia where they are found living naturally living in streams and swamps. They have gained popularity due to their lovely colour but also their appetite for all kinds of algae - this makes them perfect for the planted aquarium. They are peaceful, and are a great addition to any peaceful freshwater aquarium.

Cherries prefer a well planted tank with lots of hiding places. They should be housed with small peaceful fish which will not pose a threat of eating these shrimp - they can be housed with larger fish but they will hide and may end up being dinner. They prefer water that is slightly acidic, but will handle a wide range of water temperatures.

Cherry Shrimp breed in freshwater providing they are happy with their water conditions and their environment. They are omnivores and consume algae and any fish food they can find or scavenge. We recommend you supplement their diet with one of the shrimp foods available here at Aqua Essentials.

How our shrimp arrive with you?

We take shipping of our shrimp very seriously and every effort is made to ensure they arrive with you in the same strong and healthy condition as they were sent in.

We do not feed the shrimp for 12 hours before shipping them to avoid any waste in the water.

We place them in a bag with no air - this is because their is plenty of oxygen in the water and by leaving air in the bag the water movement is increased causing the shrimp to get bashed around.

We put a small handful of filter wool in the bag - this is for the shrimp to hold on to. Shrimp are much happier when they have something to hold on to and provides cushioning and stability for them.

The bag is placed in a small strong cardboard with plenty of shredded paper to protect them. Shredded paper also provides warmth. The cardboard box provides insolation as well.

The shrimp are then sent via Express Delivery only so they arrive with you the very next day.

We recommend that you acclimatise your shrimp well before placing them in their new home. You will receive a care sheet with your shrimp with instructions of how to do this.

Less than half the price of Watermarque shrimp! I ordered 8 to add to my 3 females. After disappearing into to undergrowth for a while they become very active. Two females are now pregnant which is just what I got them for. Should have plenty to populate my main community aquarium soon.

Having order back in October I have waited for the shrimp to settle before writing a review. having order ten, although initially disappearing into the plants they have all thrived and now there must be at least close to 30 at the last count. An excellent idea to have and acclimatization sheet in the package.

Arrived in ROI in 3 days in a fairly good condition, understandably stressed but after good aclimatisation they do well now and getting on well with other shrimps in the tank (about 40 now), also noticed that one of my females is now pregnant, not sure is this a new batch or the old one though.

The shrimp arrived well packaged and healthy despite the best efforts of the courier who left it as his last delivery of the day. Good, all encompassing instructions on how to acclimate the shrimp. I followed them step by step and every one of my shrimp survived and are happily feeding and enjoying their new home. Hopefully see some eggs soon....

These shrimp were very well packaged when they arrived, I was very impressed. When I took them out of the packaging they looked really healthy, again impressed! They're now settled really well into my tank and enjoying their new home! I will definitely be buying more RCS from here, it was a great service. I've also got a bamboo shrimp in there, I only wish Aqua Essentials sold those too (maybe something to consider for the future?!) - Thanks a lot for your service Aqua Essentials!

The instructions that was supplied with the shrimps were really useful.Thought I had lost them all for a few days but are now spotting them scurrying around the tank (I have a heavily planted tank so always a bit of a hunt!)

After 3 months of having Cherries and seeing no eggs, a month or so after the shrimp from Aqua Essentials arrived, I have a few females carrying eggs now!! I also had a few deaths soon after delivery from other suppliers and every single one of those I received from Aqua Essentials are doing well and making themselves firmly at home. Thanks!
